City Water Department employees will flush fire hydrants and water mains on the dates and at locations below from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., weather permitting.
Tuesday, April 16: The portion of Crete south of the Burlington tracks and from Grove Avenue west to the Blue River, and that area west of the Blue River;
Wednesday, April 17: The portion of Crete north of the Burlington tracks;
Thursday and Friday, April 18-19: The portion of Crete south of the Burlington tracks and from Grove Avenue east.
The Public Works Department regrets the inconvenience that will result from the rusty, discolored water. It is necessary to flush the hydrants and mains at intervals to clean them and to check fire hydrant condition. It is recommend laundering be postponed until the water has cleared several hours after flushing.
As of yesterday afternoon, the Youth Homelessness Matters Day campaign for students identified within the Crete Public School District has earned $4,650. Although the sleepout itself was just over 24 hours, giving opportunities are still available. The Crete News strives to raise funding that each child is able to receive a new pair of shoes and backpack to begin the school year in the fall, a financial goal of $7,500.

The Crete volunteer fire department is hosting an open house celebrating Terry Petracek's 50 years of service with Crete Fire & Rescue. Petracek joined the department in May of 1974. He has served in many leadership roles, been a mentor to countless new members and dedicates himself to serving the community as a volunteer firefighter and EMT.
The open house will be at the Crete fire station on Sunday, April 21 from 1-3 p.m.
The Friend Elementary School Student Council is making a difference by hosting a Books and Blankets Drive to benefit children at Nebraska Medical Center who are awaiting or recovering from an organ transplant. The council is asking local families to donate NEW books to the cause anytime between now and April 24. Send books in with your child or drop them off at the front office.
The Saline County assessor's office closed until 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24 due to an all staff training.
A Kentucky Derby fundraising luncheon will be held May 4 at 11 a.m. at the San Carlo Room in Friend. This is a joint fundraiser for the Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Store (HATS) and the Friend Historical Society. Attendees are encouraged to wear a hat/bonnet and attend to enjoy mint juleps, a Derby lunch, and style shop by Cumberlands Style Shop. Each will draw for a horse upon arrival. Those who have the horse name which wins the actual race will receive a prize. Proceeds from ticket sales and the silent auction held throughout the event will benefit both organization's projects. Admission is $30.
The Doane University "New Hall" naming ceremony will be May 10 at 4 p.m. The naming ceremony will honor and recognize the donor of Doane’s largest gift to date. The
ceremony will include information about the donor, special speeches and an unveiling of the
building’s official name. A reception will begin at 4:30 p.m., inside the main lobby of the
residence hall. Guests may enter from 13th Street and Code Avenue.

The Crete girls' tennis team took down Lincoln Northwest at its home dual on April 19. The Cardinal doubles went 3-0 and the singles went 3-3.
The Crete girls' soccer team had a tough time staying with Norris on a windy Thursday, losing 9-0 on April 18.
The Crete boys' soccer team traveled to Norris on April 18 and picked up its 10th win of the season, defeating the Titans 4-1.
Crete-Milford hosted Blair at Tuxedo Park April 18 and held the Bears to one run through four innings. BHS posted six runs in the fifth and held off the Cardinals 7-3. Carson Kotil, Nick Wendt and Ethan Placzek had two hits each for CM. The team is next in action April 23 at Nebraska City.
