WCHS boys win runner-up

The Wilber-Clatonia boys’ basketball team went 2-1 in the Runza holiday tournament and finished as the event runner-up Jan. 2.

The Wolverines opened play Dec. 28 with a 55-50 win over Central City, then defeated Bruning-Davenport-Shickley 41-37 Dec. 30 before falling to Cozad 62-49 in the championship game.

WCHS had two reach double figures against BDS, with Aiden Zajicek scoring 17 and Cooper Palmer 10. Zajicek just missed a double double with nine rebounds. Palmer added three assists and blocked two shots.

WC went 5-20 from the three-point line, with Zajicek making three and Palmer and Graysen Vlcan each knocking down one.

Wilber-Clatonia trailed Cozad 14-12 after the first quarter, but the Haymakers had a good second frame to extend the lead to 31-18 at halftime. The Wolverines stayed even with CHS in the second half but couldn’t dig out of the hole.

Cash Keslar led the team with 20 points. Zajicek added 13 and Jameson Conway 10. Palmer delivered four assists in the game, as well.

Wilber-Clatonia (6-3) defeated Syracuse 45-38 (7-2) Jan. 7, will host Johnson County Central (7-3) Thursday, Jan. 9, at 7:30 p.m. and host Southern (4-4) Saturday, Jan. 11, at 5 p.m. Thayer Central (5-1) comes to town Tuesday, Jan. 14, for a 7:30 p.m. game.
