Descendants of the Daniel family gathered in Crete on June 7 for a long-anticipated reunion that celebrates not only family ties, but the enduring legacy of three immigrant brothers who helped shape the town’s architectural landscape in the late 1800s.
The Daniels, three brothers and a sister who emigrated from what is now the Czech Republic, settled in Crete in the 1880s. Skilled carpenters by trade, the brothers became well known for constructing homes, barns and community buildings throughout the area.
Their influence is still visible today, at the Crete Sokol Hall and with around 20 other Daniel-built houses still standing in Crete.
The Crete Heritage Society's Benne Museum is expanding this year to display even more of Crete's history. To learn about the museum, the new exhibits coming its way and the project's timeline, read the Crete News tomorrow, June 11.
