NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING RELATING TO THE LOWER BIG BLUE NATURAL RESOURCES DISTRICT EXTENDING THE MORATORIUM ON THE CONSTRUCTION OF NEW WELLS AND THE INCREASE OF IRRIGATED ACRES Pursuant to Neb. Rev. Stat. § 46 743, the Lower Big Blue Natural Resources District (NRD) hereby provides notice that the Lower Big Blue NRD shall hold a public hearing as required by Neb. Rev. Stat. § 46-707(2) on Thursday, May 18, 2023, at 6:00 p.m. at the DeWitt Community Building, located at 200 N Cherry Street, DeWitt, NE 68341. The purpose of the hearing is to take public testimony on extending the moratorium on the construction of new wells and the increase of irrigated acres within the entire geographic area of the Lower Big Blue NRD. The Lower Big Blue NRD is proposing to extend the moratorium enacted at its regular board meeting on December 8, 2022, under the authority of Neb. Rev. Stat. § 46-707(2). The purpose of extending the moratorium is due to the continued drought conditions and concerns about the sustainability of groundwater supplies in the area. Extending the moratorium will also give the Lower Big Blue NRD Board of Directors more time to evaluate the geology, management options, and rules and regulations revisions that may be needed in areas that are experiencing static water level declines. Any interested person may appear at the public hearing and present written or oral testimony concerning extending the moratorium.
