Maxine McKenna, age 97, passed away Dec. 25, 2021, in Kansas.

She was born on the family farm 3.5 miles north of Swanton to Elmer and Sadie (Sasek) Tachovsky, the oldest of two children. In 1943, at 19 years of age, she rode the bus from Beatrice to Wichita, Kansas, for a 55 cents-an-hour job at Boeing, doing her part in the war effort.

Having met on a blind date, she later married a soldier, James E. McKenna, on March 21, 1945, in Wichita. They had two children, a son, Michael E. (Debbie) and a daughter, Janet L. McKenna, (Robert) McElroy. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer J. and Sadie (Sasek) Tachovsky, along with her brother, Charles and her loving husband of 61 years, James.

She is survived by her two children, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A private service was conducted at the Wilber Czech Cemetery. Condolences may be left for the family online at www.kunclfh.com.
